Claude Chat is a conversation you steer turn by turn. Claude Cowork takes a whole task and hands back a finished file or a completed action. Claude Code is the coding agent for developers. Anthropic is now merging Chat and Cowork into one Claude, so your account may no longer show a separate Cowork option. Chat is on every plan, including Free. Cowork needs a paid plan, starting with Pro at $20 per month, and Claude Code needs a paid plan or a Claude Console account.

Claude Chat, Cowork or Code: which should you use?

If you want… Use Why
A quick answer, a draft or a thought partner Chat You stay in the conversation, and it works on the Free plan.
A finished document, spreadsheet or deck from several sources Cowork You describe the result once and come back to a file.
A task that continues after you close your laptop Cowork Cloud tasks keep running. A task that uses files or apps on your computer needs the desktop app open.
A task that repeats on a schedule Cowork Tasks can run with no device online, unless they need local files or apps. Anthropic says not to schedule tasks that touch sensitive files, send messages or make purchases.
Work in a website behind a login Cowork It can use the desktop app’s built-in browser or Claude in Chrome. Anthropic strongly advises against this for sensitive information.
To write, fix or refactor code in a repository Claude Code It is built for codebases, with terminal and editor integrations.
Agent work that runs on your own computer Claude Code On Pro, Max and Ultra, new Cowork tasks run in the cloud. Anthropic points to Claude Code in the desktop app for tasks that run only on your computer.

Chat and Cowork are becoming one Claude

Older comparisons, including the earlier version of this page, describe three separate tools. That is changing. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic began merging Chat and Cowork into a single conversation. You ask for what you need, and Claude decides how to handle it.

  • How to tell which version you have: if your message box still shows “Chat” and “Cowork” options, you have the older version. Anthropic says there is nothing to turn on.
  • Rollout: it is reaching Pro, Max and Ultra in stages, so accounts on the same plan can differ. On Team (in beta) and Enterprise, it appears where “Chat and Cowork unified” is turned on. Anthropic says Free will follow. Once your account has it, you cannot switch back.
  • Your old work: existing Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills and files carry over.
  • Permission setting: the help center names Auto as the default on Pro, Max, Ultra and Team. Claude then keeps working without asking about each step, and automated safety checks run before it acts. Manual, the default on Enterprise, asks before actions. The September announcement says Claude asks by default, so check the setting in your message box. Anthropic advises Manual for sensitive files, accounts or sites, for a new tool or site, and for mistakes that would be hard to undo.
  • Current gaps: “Add from GitHub” is not supported, you cannot branch a conversation from an earlier point, and search does not include older Cowork tasks. Dispatch is not available to new users. Incognito chats open in the previous experience, so Claude cannot create files or run code in them.

The rest of this guide still uses the three names, because the kinds of work differ even where the button has gone. Claude Code remains a separate product.

What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork brings the agent architecture behind Claude Code to everyday knowledge work, with no terminal. Instead of answering one prompt at a time, Claude plans a task, works through the steps and delivers a result. You can watch, steer or walk away.

It can do the following:

  • Produce files: Excel spreadsheets with working formulas, PowerPoint presentations and formatted documents.
  • Work with your folders: in the desktop app, Claude reads and writes files in folders you connect, with no upload step.
  • Use your apps: connectors such as Google Drive, Gmail, Microsoft 365 and Slack, plus skills and plugins.
  • Browse: it opens sites, clicks and fills forms in the desktop app’s built-in browser or in Claude in Chrome.
  • Use your computer: in beta on Pro, Max and Ultra, Claude can click and type in desktop apps.
  • Run on a schedule: for example, a summary of your inbox every Monday morning.

Where Cowork runs

Surface Plans What it adds
Desktop app (macOS, Windows, Linux in beta) All paid plans The full experience. Anthropic lists local files, browser use and computer use for macOS and Windows.
Web and mobile Pro, Max, Ultra, Team (in beta), and Enterprise once an owner enables it Start tasks, check progress and answer questions
Chrome side panel All paid plans. Enterprise needs an owner to enable it. Tasks on the page you are viewing

Since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro, Max and Ultra run on Anthropic’s servers, and there is no setting to change that. Tasks started on your computer before that date stay there. Your folders stay on your computer, and Claude reaches only the ones you connect while the desktop app is open.

However, any local file it opens is processed on Anthropic’s servers rather than staying on your device. Claude fetches a copy of that file, and the copy is deleted when you delete the session, under Anthropic’s retention rules. Deleted tasks leave Anthropic’s backend systems within 30 days.

What is Claude Chat?

Chat is the regular Claude conversation on the web, desktop and mobile. You ask, it answers, and you decide what happens next. Anthropic’s own guidance is to use it for a one-off question, for a thought partner, or for a task that does not involve a spread of files or sources. It is the only one of the three on the Free plan, where it can still search the web, create files and run code.

What is Claude Code?

Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. It understands your codebase, works across files and runs commands. You can use it in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, in the desktop app and on the web. It also offers CI integrations for GitHub and GitLab. Claude Cowork vs Claude Code

Anthropic describes them as the same agent engine applied to different things: Cowork to your files and apps, and Claude Code to a codebase. In our view, the deciding questions are whether the work is software and where it should run.

Cowork can run code and shell commands in an isolated environment on Anthropic’s servers as part of a task, so simple scripts are within its reach. For work in a repository with Git, editor integration and project instructions in CLAUDE.md, Claude Code is the tool Anthropic built for that job. Our view: if you already use a terminal or code editor daily, start with Claude Code. If you do not, start with Cowork.

Claude Chat vs Cowork

Anthropic’s Academy guide draws the line by goal. Use Chat when you are still working something out, and Cowork when you have a clear deliverable and would rather hand off the whole job. With the merged version, this is less a button you press than a way of briefing Claude. For a bigger task, state the outcome, the format and the inputs it should use.

What each one costs

Plan Price per month Includes
Free $0 Chat
Pro $20, or $17 with annual billing Chat, Cowork and Claude Code
Max $100 The same, with 5x Pro usage
Ultra $200 The same, with 10x Pro usage per week
Team $25 per seat, or $20 with annual billing. Premium seats cost $125, or $100. Chat, Cowork and Claude Code

On a subscription, you do not pay separately for each tool, because your use of Claude and Claude Code draws from the same pool. Anthropic notes that longer agent tasks that search the web, run code or create files generally use more than a quick question, and that usage may be measured slightly differently during the rollout. For heavy coding, Claude Code can also switch to pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account. Our Claude pricing guide explains the limits and Enterprise pricing.

What to watch out for with Cowork

A chat answer that is wrong costs you time. An agent that acts on your files and accounts can do more damage, and Anthropic says the risk of an attack is not zero. The main risk is prompt injection, where hidden instructions in an email or web page try to redirect Claude. Running in the cloud protects your computer and network from the code Claude runs, but it does not limit what Claude can read or do through the access you grant.

Anthropic also says you remain responsible for everything Claude does on your behalf, including messages sent, purchases, changed data and scheduled tasks. Its advice comes down to these habits:

  • Connect a dedicated working folder rather than broad access, and keep backups of important files. Claude can read, change and delete files in connected folders, although it must ask you before it permanently deletes one.
  • Keep financial documents, credentials and personal records out of its reach.
  • Be careful with computer use, which works without the permission checks that apply to other Cowork tools.
  • Treat plugins with care, because installing one can significantly expand what Claude can do.
  • Start scheduled tasks with low-risk work, review the results of each run and pause what you no longer use. Nobody is watching them in real time.
  • For work with real consequences, such as sending messages or changing important files, stay close and review what Claude does.

Claude Chat, Cowork and Code FAQ

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. Cowork is available on paid plans: Pro, Max, Ultra, Team and Enterprise. Anthropic says Free accounts will follow on the merged experience, but the pages we checked do not say what they will include. Its pricing page currently lists handing off and scheduling tasks as not included on Free.

Why can’t I see Cowork in Claude?

You probably have the new merged experience. If your message box no longer shows “Chat” and “Cowork”, describe your task in any conversation. If you are on Free, Cowork is not included. If you are on a paid plan and still see no option, update the app. On Enterprise, an owner may need to enable it for web and mobile.

Do I need the desktop app for Cowork?

Not for every task. You can use Cowork on the web and on mobile, with the plan limits shown above. You need the desktop app, open and connected, for local files, the built-in browser and computer use.

Does Cowork keep working when my computer is off?

Cloud tasks do, and scheduled tasks can run with no device online. A task that uses your local files, browser or apps needs the desktop app open, and a scheduled task that needs them runs only locally.

Can Claude Cowork write code?

It can run code and shell commands in an isolated environment during a task. For development work in a repository, Claude Code is the better fit.

Can I use all three on one plan?

Yes. Pro and above include Chat, Cowork and Claude Code, and they draw from the same usage limits on a subscription.
