What does ChatGPT Enterprise offer?

On 8/28/2023, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Enterprise. This offers a version of the popular AI solution geared towards enterprise needs. The core differences between the enterprise version and the regular version include:

  • Enhanced security and data protection
  • Ease of deployment
  • Higher performance

Security and data protection

ChatGPT Enterprise offers its customers certified data security in accordance with the “SOC 2” standard. A company that designates itself as “SOC 2 compliant” has undergone an audit and demonstrated that it has effective security measures in place to protect customer data and the confidentiality of information. Data stored in the cloud is encrypted using the AES-256 standard. In addition, the prompts, customer data and company secrets used in ChatGPT Enterprise by the companies will not be used to train future versions of ChatGPT. This had previously been a cause for concern, such as in that ChatGPT could then simply be asked, “What projects is Company X working on?” etc.

Advantages at a glance:

  • Customer prompts or data are not used for training models
  • Data encryption at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.2)
  • SOC 2 compliant

Easy deployment for employees

By deployment, OpenAI means the targeted provisioning of ChatGPT to an organization’s employees and teams. This is because a new admin console, user management (name, email address, bulk member management) and analytics functionality (what is the usage?) are highlighted as features.

In addition, single sign-on functionality is offered so that users can log in easily and coupled with company IT. For example, employees log into a company wiki and gain access to ChatGPT through it at the same time. This simplifies IT management and quick use of ChatGPT on a day-to-day basis, especially if the company has several hundred or thousand employees.

Benefits at a glance:

  • Dedicated admin console and easy bulk member management
  • SSO and domain verification
  • Analytics dashboard to understand usage

Higher performance

ChatGPT Enterprise offers approximately twice the text generation speed. In addition, unlimited GPT-4 requests are possible (in the normal version there is theoretically a cap, but we could never detect it). Very helpful is the now 32K token Context Window, so you can create much longer prompts and outputs. This is often helpful if you include information like “Summarize this text” or “Translate this text” along with the request, copying in a few pages of text and getting it back from ChatGPT.

There are also new features for “Advanced Data Analysis” (previously known as“Code Interpreter“). Data analysis and code generation are especially important for enterprises, which often have huge amounts of data in the form of spreadsheets, Word and PDF documents, wiki pages, and databases that can be better tapped by AI using the Advanced Data Analysis feature. As an example, you can think of queries like, “Find out which products sell better in which regions and give possible reasons for this based on our latest product advancements.”

Advantages at a glance:

  • 2x as fast text generation
  • Unlimited GPT-4 queries
  • More powerful “Advanced Data Analysis” feature (previously: Code Interpreter)
  • 32k Context Window
  • Shareable chat templates for enterprise workflow improvement

Data security vs. data protection: Hosting in Europe? Unclear.

The most intriguing question for European companies is how they will fare with the European data protection standard, DSGVO, rather than the SOC 2 standard implemented by OpenAI. A successful SOC 2 audit alone does not guarantee full compliance with the GDPR. The DSGVO has many specific requirements that go beyond those of SOC 2, particularly with regard to data subjects’ rights (e.g., right to erasure, right to data portability) and data processing principles.

For this, it would be important to know where and how the hosting of the ChatGPT Enterprise version is done in the cloud. Because in order to comply with GDPR guidelines, Europe-based hosting would be a core requirement. Since OpenAI does not provide any information about the hosting of ChatGPT Enterprise on their website, it can be assumed that this will initially only be done in a global cloud, i.e. it is currently not sufficient for DSGVO requirements.

How much does ChatGPT Enterprise cost? Unclear.

Costs are not mentioned yet, but only referred to the sales team. Common enterprise software is often priced by the number of users, so companies can scale in a calculated way. Companies of strategic importance are often viewed as multipliers, indicating that their prices are open to negotiation.

Conclusion: AI continues to move into companies

With ChatGPT Enterprise, OpenAI delivers a solution already anticipated by many companies to provide their employees with targeted and secure access to the powerful and efficiency-enhancing AI solution. Many European companies will probably have to wait a bit longer for enhanced data protection standards. All companies that already have the ability to use ChatGPT Enterprise will now be able to leverage the strengths of AI to improve business processes.
